The Dao Genie Sorlock | Build Guide for D&D 5e

Original Video:

*This article is an edited version of the script for this video

Race: Custom Lineage, Variant Human could work as well

Feat: Telekinetic, +1 Cha

Ability Scores(point buy):

Str: 8

Dex: 13

Con: 15

Int: 8

Wis: 12

Cha: 15(+2)

Ability Score Priorities(if rolling):

#1: Cha

#2: Con

#3: Dex

Ideal Equipment:

-Spellcasting Focus or Component Pouch

-Half Plate and Shield(once we have Moderately Armored)

Level 1: Sorcerer 1

-Sorcerous Origin: Clockwork Soul, I think it has the best spell list but Divine Soul could be interesting as well to get access to Spirit Guardians

Spells: Silvery Barbs, Sleep(make sure to swap out next sorc level)

Levels 2-4: Warlock 1-3:

-Otherworldly Patron: Genie(Dao)

—Genie’s Wrath, Additional bludgeoning damage each turn which will be important later on

-Spells: Eldritch Blast, Spike Growth

-Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Repelling Blast

Levels 5-7: Sorcerer 2-4:

-Spells: Shield, Absorb Elements, Web. Remember any spells that are Abjuration or Transmutation like Shield and Absorb Elements can be taken as Clockwork Spells as well.

-Font of Magic

-Metamagic

—Quickened Spell, allows us to place a Spike Growth or other harmful spell as a bonus action and still use Eldritch Blast as an action to move the enemy into the spell. Without Quickened Spell this would require two turns to do.

-ASI or Feat: Crusher, +1 Con. Just like every other build in this series we are using this in combination with Genie’s Wrath to get 5 feet of forced movement every turn.

Levels 8-20: Sorcerer 5-17

-3 ASIs or Feats:

—Moderately Armored, +1 Dex. This is a huge and much needed boost to our AC

—War Caster

—+2 Cha or Eldritch Adept: Grasp of Hadar

-Spells: There are obviously a lot of good ones but I’ll highlight choices that work well with forced movement: Sleet Storm, Wall of Fire, Sickening Radiance, Cloudkill. You can also move enemies before you cast a spell to get them clustered together. This works well with something like Wall of Force. Scatter is a really nice spell as well as it moves several creatures at once. There’s not a ton of options on the sorcerer list at the very high levels that synergize with this build. Be sure to take Wish though so you can duplicate spells from other classes that do synergize like Dark Star.
