Race:

Rock Gnome. The tinker feature could give us additional options for utility and tricking our enemies

Ability Scores(point buy):

Str: 8

Dex: 14

Con: 13(+1)

Int: 15(+2)

Wis: 9

Cha: 13

For this build we don’t need the optional rule from Tasha’s to edit our ability score increases.

Ability Score Priorities(if rolling):

#1 Int

#2 Con

#3 Dex

#4 At least 13 in Cha for multiclassing

Ideal Equipment:

-Halfplate Armor and a Shield

-Arcane Focus

Levels 1-2: Warlock 1-2

-Otherworldly Patron: Hexblade

—Literally just for medium armor and shield proficiency from Hex Warrior. Shield on the expanded spell list is nice as well

-Spells: Minor Illusion, Blade Ward, Shield, Expeditious Retreat

-Eldritch Invocations: Mask of Many Faces and Misty Visions. These invocations give us two great 1st level illusion spells, Disguise Self and Silent Image, at will.

Levels 3-20: Wizard 1-18

-Arcane Tradition: Illusion or Enchantment. Both give very strong options. If I was playing the character I would choose based on what level the campaign I’m playing in is going to be by the end. If its a lower level campaign I would go with Enchantment since its stronger features come earlier and if the campaign is going to get to higher levels then I think Illusion would be better mainly because of the capstone ability Illusory Reality. Its probably one of if not the best wizard capstone ability.

-Feats: We’ll get 4 feats during this time in wizard. To start of I would pick up something like War Caster or Resilient: Con to help us maintain our concentration checks. Though our main goal is to avoid combat there will still be enemies who attack us and we’ll be glad we have one of these feats. You could even take both if you want to. After getting one or both of those I would probably just boost intelligence to 20. You can use half feats or ASIs to do this. The best half feats for this build are probably Fey Touched and Shadow Touched. The new Cartomancer feat could also be a cool choice for this build as well and could add a lot of flavor if you want to make this character some kind of magician

-Spells:

—Cantrips: Mage Hand, Message, Prestidigitation

—1st: Find Familiar, Absorb Elements, Silvery Barbs, Unseen Servant, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter

—2nd: Phantasmal Force, Rope Trick, Suggestion, Web

—3rd: Blink, Hypnotic Pattern or Fear, Tiny Servant, Tongues

—4th: Dimension Door, Leomund’s Secret Chest, Polymorph

—5th: Mislead, Scrying, Seeming, Wall of Force

—6th: Mass Suggestion, Programmed Illusion

—7th: Mirage Arcane, Forcecage, Project Image

—8th: None

—9th: Wish, Time Stop, Shapechange
